How Teeth Whiteners Work

Before we whiten our teeth we have to examine why there is a need to whiten them in the first place. The fact is that our teeth become stained over time. Depending upon what you eat, consume, drink or smoke this staining may be more pronounced than it is with other people.

The outer layer of teeth is called enamel. This layer’s role is to protect your teeth. It is also the layer upon which a new layer is built. All the things we consume or that pass by way of our teeth causes a new layer to accumulate and this forms a film that attaches to the enamel.

Dentists can of course remove this film, and brushing our teeth also has some effect at removing it. Abrasive toothpastes are particularly effective at breaking down this accumulation layer.  By the time we introduce whitening toothpastes the scrubbing off of this layer becomes even more pronounced.

So, why aren’t our teeth white yet? The problem is that the staining layer builds up over years and during that time it seeps into the enamel itself. Enamel is porous which allows much of the staining materials to become part of the tooth itself. In this case, scrubbing won’t remove these unattractive additions. Where this isn’t harmful to the tooth, it doesn’t win any contests either.

Tooth whiteners are able to remove these stains by using bleaching chemicals that work in the enamel layer. This process is referred to as “oxidation,” and it breaks up the staining compounds deep in the enamel.

Whiteners actually use the same chemical used to bleach hair: hydrogen peroxide. It is delivered in the form of “Carbamide Peroxide” but turns to hydrogen peroxide and then the true stain cleaning begins.

Using Technology to Detect Oral Cancer

BRIGHTON, CO - SEPTEMBER 11: Dental hygiene s...

It is impossible to see every angle of your mouth to know when something is wrong. Often, the first clue is a pain; however, it is very hard to tell whether it is a simple problem that is easily fixed or a more devastating diagnosis, such as oral cancer. This where the dentist employs all the tools of the trade to fix what is wrong.

One of those tools is gathering all the information possible once oral cancer is suspected. The dentist uses X-rays, a physical exam and healthcare informatics to determine the diagnosis of cancer. The X-rays give an underlying visual picture of the mouth, the physical exam is the basic evaluation of the teeth and gums, and healthcare informatics is a collaboration of knowledge about the cancer and the patient’s history.

With this knowledge, the dentist can determine the precise area the cancer is in, how big the cancer is and the best approach to either removing the cancer or treating it. While it is little comfort to hear such a diagnosis made, it does help to hear that the dentist has a plan of action for the cancer.

It is through the advances in technology and information that dentists have the tools to detect oral cancer early on. Treatment can minimize the area in your mouth that is affected, and technology can increase the chance that the cancer can be successfully treated. Taking this into consideration, you can see why it is important to make regular trips to the dentist to ensure that your mouth stays in a healthy condition.

Wisdom Teeth

At some point in your lifetime, you’ll likely need to have your wisdom teeth removed. It involves little to no pain and is a common procedure. Recovery from the procedure is different and can sometimes be painful as a result of some complications. Below are those complications.

Dry socket will occur when a blood clot fails to form in the socket where a tooth was removed. This happens as a result of a sucking motion, such as from smoking or drinking through a straw. Dry socket will usualy develop within the first day or so after the wisdom teeth are removed, cuasing slower healing of the sockets.

Infection isn’t very common, but it can occur. The easiest way to avoid infection in wisdom teeth sockets is to keep your mouth clean. if you experience a high fever, painful sweling, and continuous bleeding, see a doctor right away.

Nerve Damage is experienced when, after the removal of the wisdom teeth, you have numbness or tingling anywhere in your mouth (not caused by anesthesia or novocaine). This usually happens when a nerve is crush, damaged, or in some cases, completely severed during tooth removal. The good thing is, if there is nerve damage, you’ll typically recover from it by six months after the removal of your teeth.

The removal of wisdom teeth is common, but troubles can pop up if you aren’t careful. To avoid the problems above, make sure your follow the orders from your dentist, and in no time, you’ll be feeling just fine.

Foods That Should Be Avoided To Ensure Dental Health

These days, people are very concerned about their Dental health. They follow all the tips such as proper brushing, flossing and the likes. But one thing, many people miss out is right food for dental health. There are some foods that are bad for our dental health and therefore these should be avoided in our diet. Let us discuss such foods in detail.

First of all, foods with excessive sugar should be avoided as the primary step to take care of your teeth and your oral health. A lot of people try to check whether a particular product has sugar or not by the sweet taste of that product. Sweetness is not the right way to check the sugar as an ingredient in a particular substance.

There are some products which, though are sweet, but do not contain too much sugar and some product, though are not sweet in taste, but contain a lot of sugar. Thus, the best way to check sugar in a particular product is by checking the list of ingredients on the packing of edible items and not by the taste.

It does not mean that you should not eat sugar; it only means that right quantity of sugar should be taken so that it does not damage our teeth. Many doctors say that taking sweet food is less harmful if a person takes it before, after or during the meal.

Apart from sugar, people should also avoid sticky food since such foods stick in between our teeth and therefore are not good for the oral health. Soft drinks also contain sugar as well as acid; thus, can cause problems in tooth enamel and can even cause toothache as well. Smoking and chewing tobacco can also cause serious damage to oral health and can even lead to oral or mouth cancer.

Tobacco and Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is been being observed in many people nowadays. If proper care is not taken to curb its spread, it might turn into one of the most dangerous killers like heart attack. Oral cancer is mainly due to the indifferent attitude of man towards nature and careless which has caused a substantial increase in the number of people carrying the disease.

Most of the people know that smoking is a major cause of oral cancer in the world. Yet, you may find that are indifferent and would happily suffer the consequences rather than give up the dreadful habit which can cause harm to them and those around them. Smoking not only pollutes the air, it also pollutes your body and the bodies of the people around you.

One of the main ingredients of a cigarette is the substance called tobacco. The tobacco has more than half of its chemical components as carcinogenic ones. It can cause other diseases like ulcer, infection and many more, but the deadly one is oral cancer. Other diseases too can be deadly if they are not properly controlled.

Tobacco is excessively used in cigarettes and it is the flavor of the tobacco that you feel when you smoke. There are people who chew tobacco in its treated form, sometimes along with betel leaves. Apart from cigars, tobacco is used in hookahs, snuffs, and many more materials which are sure and guaranteed to give you some disease or the other.

Nearly three-fourth of the patients who are being treated for oral cancer admits that the cause is due to tobacco consumption either in the form of a cigarette or any other way. It remains the major cause and they can only cure themselves from this disease if they abandon their habit of smoking and ingesting tobacco into their body.

What is Oral Cancer?

American Cancer Society
Image via Wikipedia

Oral Cancer is also referred to as Lip Cancer, Mouth Cancer, Pharynx Cancer, Oral Cavity Cancer, Mouth Cancer, Sinus Cancer, Cheek Cancer, Tongue Cancer and Throat Cancer.

The American Cancer Society claim that men are two times at risk for the development of Oral Cancer than women. Men who are over 50 years old are deemed at the greatest risk.

By nature Cancer is defined as cells which grow uncontrollably invading and damaging all surrounding tissues. When one has oral cancer it begins with a sore or growth that remains perpetually. When it is not diagnosed or treated in a timely manner it can become life threatening.

In its earliest stages Oral Cancer can actually go unnoticed, thus making it incredibly dangerous. At the start it can be painless, and very little physical changes might be noticed.

There are many symptoms and signs of oral cancer. Some of the most common signs include thickening and swelling of the area in question, rough and eroded areas located among the gums, lips, exterior, and interior of the oral cavity. The occurrence of white, red or white and red patches within the mouth. Individuals with Oral Cancer might discover numbness without explanation, tenderness and aches and pains (feeling sore and unable to swallow). Throat/Oral Cancer has been known to cause bleeding without cause, a hard time swallowing and chewing.

Other symptoms of Oral Cancer can be dramatic weight loss, a noticeable difference in your bite (the way your teeth seem to fit together,) constant pain in the throat, change or hoarseness in the voice, sores that remain persistent on the neck, face or mouth that have difficulty healing.

Smoking cigarettes, cigars or pipes, using smokeless tobacco products, a family history of cancer, heightened exposure to the sun, having HPV, excessive alcohol consumption, and poor diet leave individuals at a greater risk for developing Oral Cancer.

Start Dental Care Young

For most, the proper dental hygiene and care needed to ensure a healthy routine begins at a young age. Often, we are taught in childhood learning centers or pre-school that taking care of our teeth is very important. However, we usually only pay attention to the giant set of teeth used at the front of the classroom as a model. The guest instructor or pre-school teacher will usually hand out a toothbrush for each child—another reason why we only pay a small amount of attention to the important information provided.

Explained, in a way a child can understand, they teach children how to brush. In a circular motion, all the way to the back of the mouth, along the gumline. Seems easy enough and from that point forward, brushing is part of the daily routine for many of us.

One thing, though: we, as children, only paid so much attention during those lessons about brushing our teeth. We spend a few moments with too much toothpaste standing over the sink and brushing ineffectively. This is hardly enough to ensure our breath stays fresh throughout the busy morning. In order to make sure we are getting the most out of the time we spend brushing our teeth, we must do it correctly, twice a day and sometimes more if we have just had onions!

There are tips when brushing and one of the most well – known tip for making sure you are brushing for a solid amount of time is to hum a tune while you brush. Don’t stop until a chosen tune is done. That should just be enough but make sure you aren’t simply running the brush along the front teeth. While a smile is important, it won’t be much of one without the proper health for all of your teeth.

Get the back teeth and back gums. Some folks will even brush their tongue to finish off the deal. While it seems like a lot of work, having the right pattern, routine and vigorous teeth brushing standard each time will ensure your Oral Health is in top form.

What are the treatment side effects of Oral Cancer?

Students working with an artificial patient (F...
Image via Wikipedia

Because it is hard to place limitations on cancer treatment so that only cancerous cells are removed, impacted or destroyed many healthy cells and tissues are often victimized during the road to recovery thus causing side effects for the patient.

With each patient the side effects of treatment could potentially vary. Factors which may make a difference in and individual’s side effects experienced may include the type, and duration of the treatment as well as the area of the body being treated. As always, different strokes for different folks and the body chemistry is going to play a role in determining how a person responds to treatment. Some side effects of treatment are temporary while some might be permanent. Physicians typically make it a point to plan each patient’s treatment in a manner which reduces the number of side effects experienced. Patients are monitored closely so that issues can be handled quickly.

Surgery designed to remove small tumors doesn’t typically leave a patient with issues, larger tumors sometimes require removal of full portions of the mouth, jaw, or tongue and could leave a patient with an inability to swallow, talk or chew as well as a difference in physical appearance. Post surgery a patient could notice a swollen face or jaw, this dissipates after a few weeks, in some instances it might last a while.

Patients may experience sore mouth, a reduction in saliva (also referred to as dry mouth), decline in the health of a patient’s teeth or gums, mouth sores, cracked or peeling lips and weight loss.

Cancer side effects and treatments are different for each individual patient, and could even be different from one treatment to the next with an individual patient. Doctors, nurses and dietitians can easily explain to patients what they might experience based on their particular method of treatment.
