Cancer of the mouth is also called as oral cancer. It is a very difficult condition to treat because of the fact that the disease can spread from the mouth to the other parts of the body too. The oral cancer has various causes. The main causes of the oral cancer are the use of various substances like tobacco and other similar products.

The treatment of Oral cancer also varies according to the cause of the cancer. The most important factor that has to be taken care of is that the person who is suffering from oral cancer should make sure that they stop using the substances that caused the cancer in the first place. This and the prevention of other complications should be the primary goal of the treatment.

Once this is taken care of, the next step of diagnosing the disease and the extent to which it has spread is very important. This can be done by methods like radio diagnosis. Once the identification of the disease in the various parts of the body other than the mouth is seen, then the treatment plan is made.

The first treatment would be chemotherapy. Various drugs in high doses are given to the person who is suffering from the oral cancer. This will prevent the cancer from spreading to the other parts of the body. The use of chemotherapy also has various side effects because the person may have vomiting and nausea because of the high doses of medications.

Radiotherapy or radiation therapy is also alternated with chemotherapy or used as a standalone treatment if it is seen that the disease has spread to various other organs like the lungs. Radiation therapy is also used if the person has liver disease and toxic drugs should not be given.

Surgical excision of the tumor is another option in the treatment of oral cancer.

Either way can be beneficial, though, as long as you’re open-minded and willing to talk with other people who’re on the same journey that you’re on. A lot of people are angry when they get a cancer diagnosis. Some of them are also very sad, and very frightened. The reactions really run the gamut of emotions, but most people go through a lot of different feelings about it before they come to accept it.

Oral cancer can be particularly upsetting because of the possibility of disfigurement that comes with it. Sometimes part of the jaw or other areas of the mouth has to be removed, and that can leave people looking different and having trouble with basic things like eating and speaking. Hypnosis, prayer, meditation, acupuncture, aromatherapy, and other choices can be used in conjunction with the common choices for cancer treatment. While these aren’t touted as a cure for cancer, it has been suggested that they do help some people recover from their cancer treatments faster. They also help people have a more positive frame of mind, which allows anyone to feel better and promotes healing no matter what kind of illness is causing a problem. You don’t have to have cancer to benefit from these kinds of treatments.

For someone who has cancer, it’s important to have hope. Alternative treatments can provide that in conjunction with standard treatments, or as an option after standard treatments have ceased to be effective. Alternative treatments can also be used for palliative care and pain relief, even if it’s not possible to cure the cancer or send it into remission. Don’t assume that you can’t get help for your cancer, because there are so many choices that you can explore. That allows you to have options that you might not have had in the past, and can promote healing and hope for patients with all different types of cancer.

If you’re going to explore alternative treatments, though, be sure to talk with your doctor first. That’s especially true if you’re going to take any kinds of herbs or supplements. There may be a specific reason why you shouldn’t take something, as it could react with something else you’re being treated with. 20 Minute Oral Cancer Test to Improve Patient Experience

Scientists in the UK are trialing a new test that hopes to be able to diagnose oral cancers in just 20 minutes.
The group, from the University of Sheffield, have developed a simple mouth swab screen that they hope will be able to replace the current, more invasive, testing methods which involve taking a small skin sample from the inside of the mouth under local anesthetic and sending it away for analysis – a process that can take up to a week.
With increasing concerns are over the alarming rise in oral cancers, which have gone up by 28 percent in male over-forties and 24 percent in women of the same age in the past decade, according to charity Cancer Research UK, it is hoped the new test could be the possible key to extended oral screening as well as faster cancer detection and earlier treatments.
The news is being welcomed by health campaigners who have issued calls for people to be more aware of the dangers of oral cancers in the wake of the revelation that Michael Douglas is suffering from a stage four cancer of the throat.
Currently in the trial stage, the test is carried out by taking a swab from any suspicious areas in the mouth and transferring cells to a small chip, which is then placed in a reading machine for analysis.
Results are returned in as little as eight minutes – allowing healthcare providers to make a swift diagnosis and begin essential treatment as soon as possible.
Research team leader Professor Martin Thornhill explained that the group was currently carrying out a study to compare the new testing results against traditional methods of diagnosis.
He said that the team hoped the technology would eventually be rolled out to doctors and dental professionals to help them carry out spot checks on suspicious areas with minimal stress to the patient, who will no longer have to wait while samples are analysed and can be quickly reassured in the event that no abnormalities are uncovered.

Oral Cancer Patient Gets Payout After Symptoms Dismissed

A UK Throat Cancer sufferer received a £300,000 ($460,000) settlement after he claimed doctors failed to diagnose oral cancer in time to save his speech.
Stephen Quinn was awarded the amount in an out of court without prejudice agreement after he claimed that his doctor had not taken action soon enough when he went to him complaining of a swollen lump in his neck and querying whether it could be cancer.
The former paper-mill worker, who attended his local clinic for checkups on a regular basis because he was concerned that exposure to dust and chemical throughout his career could have had a negative impact on his health, first raised concerns over is symptoms in May of 2003.
However it took until the following year for the now 56-year-old to receive a diagnosis of throat cancer.
The patient was then told that he would need surgery to treat the throat cancer, which sadly resulted in his loss of speech.
Mr Quinn spoke of his anger at the delay, which he believed has resulted in the lasting damage and said that a specialist had told that his condition might have been treated with non-invasive chemotherapy techniques, thus preserving his voice, had it been caught sooner.
Now working as watch seller in a market, the oral cancer survivor said that the money could not bring his voice back and spoke at his sadness of not being able to give a father of the bride speech at his daughter’s recent wedding.
However Mr Quinn is now turning his hand to helping support research to help future cancer patients and is working with charity cancer research UK to help promote one of their fundraising initiatives in Wales.
He added that his life would be very different and more normal if his doctors had reacted more speedily to his concerns in the first place.

Betel Nut Blamed For Taiwan Oral Cancer Death Toll

Experts in Taiwan are blaming a rise in the rate of oral cancer on the popular habit of chewing betel nut as well as smoking and drinking alcohol.
Taiwanese health professionals have seen oral cancer rates rise by four times in the the last four decades, making oral cancer conditions such as mouth cancer and throat cancers one of the 10 top causes of death in the country.
One public health researcher, Dr Liao Yung-po carried out a study that revealed a rise of 280 percent in deaths resulting from oral cancer conditions and also discovered that the risk of death from the disease for males was quadruple that of females.
Dr Yung-po has now called on the government to take action to halt the rising death toll from oral cancer.
The majority of the cancers seen throughout the study were squamous cell carcinomas – a variant of the disease that is ofen associated with substance use such as tobacco smoking, drinking alcohol and chewing betel nut – the fruit of the areca tree which is prepared and mixed with tobacco for oral use.
Chewing betel nut is a traditional practice in many Asian countries, where the practice is believed to produce benefits such as reducing tiredness and making users more alert – manual workers often chew betel nut to help them through their tasks while the product is also considered something of a traditional remedy to increase appetite and aid digestion.
However in studies of animals and human cells, the plant has been shown to have been instrumental in the development of cancerous changes to cells.
Dr Yung-po said the increase in oral cancer deaths was “alarming” and repeated requests for the country’s health authorities to act to bring the situation under control and prevent further unnecessary deaths from oral cancer conditions such as mouth and throat cancers.

What most people don’t realize is how old tooth care really is. Considering the fact that for as long as humans have been around, so have our teeth, you would think that before fancy colored toothbrushes and gum massaging bristles, we had other sources of ways to clean our teeth.
It is true. Teeth, our smiles, our mouths, they are not simply for looks. We’ve needed them as tools and we still do, although not as desperately used to rip apart food as before, they are functioning items on our body. So how did we sharpen our tools and take care of our teeth before?
Well, history has shown us that before, many bushmen and people of dignitary positions did the same thing in order to cleanse their teeth. That was chewing on sticks. While, in an emergency, such as a date or something, any stick would have worked, most folks chose to use special twigs that had a light mint flavor. These twigs were scraped across the teeth to remove any food and later massaged the gumline. It seems primitive now, but at the time, this was the smartest thing going, especially when it came to oral health care.
To this day, the idea of keeping your teeth clean with a stick may seem so ancient, however, if you are on a camping trip or you are stuck without any way of cleaning your teeth, you are better off using a twig. You may have seen people use their finger to clean their teeth, but chewing on a twig and massaging your gumline with a twig is not primitive, it is simply fundamentals of cleaning your teeth. It won’t give you the minty fresh breath that most people associate with a clean mouth, but it will get the job done. Even our ancestors will tell you so.
If you have access to dental floss and a proper toothbrush, you should opt for that over a twig, though. Our ancestors would be proud of the eveolution of dental care.
