Having health insurance can be costly, which is why many people are still uninsured. However, the cost of not being insured could be much higher–and not necessarily just financial cost either. Few things in life are more important than your health and to keep yourself in good shape you need to pay particular attention to preventative care. If you can’t afford to see the doctor regularly now, consider that health insurance will allow you to have regular checkups so that your doctor can keep an eye on your health. Also, doctors know the human body better than anyone—if you’re wondering how to get healthier, asking your doctor is a great place to start.

With regular checkups, if you are in the early stages of a disease, serious or otherwise, your doctor can diagnose it soon enough to help you recover with much more ease and comfort than would have been possible if it was discovered in an advanced stage. In the case of a serious condition such as cancer, health insurance could save your life by providing those checkups.

Other health insurance benefits include coverage for those with disabilities–helping to pay for a new wheelchair for example, or for physical therapy–and for those with long-term or lifelong medical conditions. Diabetics can get their insulin prescriptions at a discounted price with health insurance and can also see the doctor regularly for checkups to keep tabs on their condition, which is very important. Cancer patients can use their health insurance to pay for chemotherapy and other treatments.

When you’re sick, worrying about finances on top of everything else can be overwhelming and insurance can help apatient’s anxiety in that respect as well. If you don’t have health insurance, go check out online insurance quotes, compare several to find which is best for you — and get a plan started. You deserve a long and happy life and a small monthly payment is certainly worth that.

Keeping your mouth healthy should be a priority for everyone. Oral health is important. With different diseases and cancers affecting the mouth, it is vital that you address the health of your mouth along with the health of your body. Cigarettes are a leading cause of oral health issues. Kicking the bad habit of smoking can be difficult. For some, it is downright impossible. Nicotine is addictive and once people are addicted, quitting can sometimes be out of reach. This is why many people are addressing their nicotine habit with a different approach. Rather than focusing on quitting completely, many people are trying to reduce their nicotine intake. They are trying to wean themselves off cigarettes.

One helpful way to reduce your nicotine intake is with an electronic cigarette. Making the switch to electronic cigarettes instead of regular cigarettes gives you total control over your nicotine intake. Electric cigarettes operate on batteries. Instead of burning tobacco, tar and other harmful additives, you inhale a vaporized form of water and nicotine. With some tasty flavors available, you can enjoy your cigarette in the same way that you enjoy regular cigarettes. The only difference is that you will be having your nicotine in a much healthier way.

“Vaping” on an electronic cigarette makes it possible for you to get your nicotine in places where smoking is banned. There is no worry of second-hand smoke because you inhale the nicotine vapor. There is not bothersome odor and the people around you will appreciate it. If you are trying to keep your oral health at its highest level, consider trading your cigarettes for the electric version. You can still satisfy your nicotine cravings, only you will be doing it in a way that is safer for you and for everyone around you. You can even lower your nicotine level gradually, helping you to stop smoking for good.

While most people make an annual trip to the doctor for a health physical, many are avoiding the dentist for various reasons. Regular trips to the dentist are an important part of detecting and then preventing Oral Cancer.

A yearly visit to the dentist is a superb way for this dental-health professional to assess not only the health of your teeth, but also detect any early signs of oral cancer.

It’s no secret that those who use tobacco products increase their chances of developing oral cancer. If you think the only tobacco product that can cause oral cancer is smokeless tobacco or chew (sometimes called snuff), you would be mistaken. Smoking cigarettes also greatly increases the chances of developing oral cancer as the ingestion of the tobacco product is nearly as harmful as chewing tobacco. Electronic cigarettes have become a healthier option for smokers who are concerned about developing this cancer of the mouth.

The most common sign of Oral Cancer would be finding a sore in the mouth. It’s important to pay attention if a sore in your mouth lingers as many people have cold-sores or canker sores especially during the winter months. If you have a sore that persists for more than 10 days, it’s crucial to get to a dentist for early detection.

Oral Cancer is not always detected in the mouth. For some, their first sign of a problem might come in the form of a lump in the neck. The beginnings of oral cancer can just as easily start in the neck as opposed to the mouth.

Other signs of oral cancer can be problems swallowing or a certain loss of feeling sensation in parts of the mouth. For any kind of lumps or loss of feeling or inability to swallow, consult with a physician or a dentist if a problem persist more than a week.

Being healthy is a very tough job in the world today with all the pollution, junk food and desk bound jobs. Gone are the days when people used to be “fit as fiddles”. You can see even the children getting tired and fatigued very easily. Perhaps our ancestors had a much happier life than we are having now with fewer troubles regarding their health.

One of the first steps to having a healthy life is to eat healthy. This feat can be made next to impossible when you think of how dependant you are on the junk food and ready-to-eat dishes which are loaded with chemical preservatives. You should be aware of the fact that you are consuming more oil and fat than the healthy side of a food substance when opting for these two.

Having fresh fruits and vegetables is the way to get some life into your unhealthy body. Try taking them in the form of fruit juices, or salads. Having them raw would give you more energy and benefits than cooked food. Of course, with all the pesticides and insecticides you can hardly trust the food in the markets, but wash them properly and have them. They are definitely better than junk food.

Have work outs or at least move your body in some way or the other so that it can handle long and stressful days. Doing exercise may be too much for you, in that case, try to do small things like taking the stairs instead of the lift or walking to the grocery instead of using the car. Small things go a long way.

Staying fit and healthy is not at all a difficult task. Once you get that thought out of your mind you can be assured that you will be able to live healthily.

Once a doctor has determined the diagnosis and stage of oral cancer in a particular individual it is then important for a plan of treatment to be designed to fit the needs of the specific patient. Oral cancer treatments depend upon a range of factors which include size, type, location, and stage of the disease. The patient’s general health and age is also taken into account by the physician. It is then determined whether or not chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery or a combination of the available treatment methods.

Prior to beginning a treatment the majority of patients are required to have a full dental exam. Cancer treatments typically cause the mouth to become more sensitive, and additionally infected more easily. Doctors typically tell patients to have any needed or required dental work taken care of before the start of treatment as once treatment begins it might be too uncomfortable.

It is important for cancer patients to know a significant amount about their disease and choices for treatment so that an active role can be taken in the decision making process. A patient should always ask any and all questions for their physician. Some patients find that making a list of questions prior to the appointment with their physician will make it easier to remember what needs to be asked, and how the doctor responds.

Making decisions regarding treatment can be difficult, a patient might want to have multiple doctors review the diagnosis and the planned course of action for treatment. There is an extensive amount to learn about an individual’s cancer and treatment options. Getting a second opinion will not cause a significant delay in treatment but will give the patient a sound mind when making such a life altering decision.

There are a variety of options, and patients should keep an open mind regarding things such as clinical trials, which might offer up treatment methods that work, and help that are not readily available to the public.

Often, we are taught in childhood learning centers or pre-school that taking care of our teeth is very important. However, we usually only pay attention to the giant set of teeth used at the front of the classroom as a model. The guest instructor or pre-school teacher will usually hand out a toothbrush for each child—another reason why we only pay a small amount of attention to the important information provided.

Explained, in a way a child can understand, they teach children how to brush. In a circular motion, all the way to the back of the mouth, along the gumline. Seems easy enough and from that point forward, brushing is part of the daily routine for many of us.

One thing, though: we, as children, only paid so much attention during those lessons about brushing our teeth. We spend a few moments with too much toothpaste standing over the sink and brushing ineffectively. This is hardly enough to ensure our breath stays fresh throughout the busy morning. In order to make sure we are getting the most out of the time we spend brushing our teeth, we must do it correctly, twice a day and sometimes more if we have just had onions!

There are tips when brushing and one of the most well – known tip for making sure you are brushing for a solid amount of time is to hum a tune while you brush. Don’t stop until a chosen tune is done. That should just be enough but make sure you aren’t simply running the brush along the front teeth. While a smile is important, it won’t be much of one without the proper health for all of your teeth.

Get the back teeth and back gums. Some folks will even brush their tongue to finish off the deal. While it seems like a lot of work, having the right pattern, routine and vigorous teeth brushing standard each time will ensure your Oral Health is in top form.

It is a human’s natural way of saying, “I’m open to talk”, “I’m happy”, and so many other emotions that reveal you are in a state of heightened joy or awareness to positive surroundings. In an effort to get that “perfect” smile, so many people take on surgery or cosmetic dentistry in order to have a more youthful and “perfect” smile.

What makes a perfect smile, though? For many, having pristine, white teeth is the answer. For others, having the straightest teeth possible can be the solution. What we must remember is that while straight, white teeth may look good, it doesn’t mean that you are in the epitome of oral health. A crooked tooth or a less than white shade is nothing when you think of the many, less superficial problems that face many in the oral health field.

Often, you will hear of people who brush their teeth often. They never, though, speak about flossing. Most dentists agree that flossing is just as, if not more so, important than brushing. When you floss, you are massaging and cleaning the gums, something that is often ignored. The gums are the foundation of your teeth! They hold the nerves, they make sure your teeth stay as healthy as they are.
Keeping clear of the things that stain your teeth is important for a white set of choppers. Flossing and taking care of your gums, even the teeth that are way in the back, is important, too. This will ensure that you keep your teeth!

So, when you are looking into that smile of yours, be sure that you aren’t too focused on the superficial part of your smile. Watch your oral health from the back to the front of your mouth. Oral Health medicine professionals can help you get your tooth routine in order. By default, your smile will shine from the inside out.

Preventative medicine can go a long way toward ensuring that your health stays the best that it can be. With so many responsibilities weighing down on you as a responsible adult, it can be all too easy to put off yearly checkups and appointments. It is important, however, to keep up with a schedule so that you can take care of your responsibilities when you are in the best possible health. Read on for a few of the appointments you should make every year.

1. Your Dentist. Most dentists recommend that their patients come every six months for a check up and a cleaning. If that is not possible due to your schedule, it is imperative that you schedule an appointment at least once a year. Your dentist will make sure to look for any potential problems that might be lurking in your mouth.

2. Your Annual Checkup. Even if you do not have any chronic diseases such as high blood pressure or diabetes, you will still need to have a yearly check up by your doctor. This will help to ensure that your blood pressure is within normal ranges. In addition, as you age, your doctor will recommend that you have certain tests done on a regular basis. These tests are used a screening tool in order to help catch any problems with your health while they are still in the early stages.

3. Your Gynecologist. This is for women only, of course. Many women tend to put this doctor’s visit off. This can be due to the many responsibilities that she has. It is vital, however, for women to have their yearly visit with this doctor. The yearly tests that are performed within the doctor’s visit are often the first clue that certain, very treatable, cancers have been found.

The word cancer is something that many people fear. There is good reason for this fear. There are many different types of cancers and, if not caught at the early stages, can be difficult to fight. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do to help protect yourself.

1. Eat Wisely. By eating lots of fresh vegetables and fruits, you are giving your body what it needs to function at its best. Drinking lots of fresh water will help to remove the toxins from your body. Water also helps to prevent these toxins from building up. Try to limit your intake of beef. Instead eat lean cuts of beef if you must eat it. It is best to eat more chicken and turkey, instead, as these are leaner meats.

2. Exercise. It is important to exercise at least a few times a week. Most people, no matter what their physical health is like, can engage in some form of exercise. A walk around the block is a great start if you are overweight and very out of shape. Swimming is a great form of exercise that is gentle enough for even people with joint problems to be able to do.

3. Curb Your Vices. Cigarette smoking, excessive drinking and overeating are not just bad habits. They can have serious consequences to your health. While having a glass of wine or a beer occasionally will likely not harm you, drinking to excess on a regular basis can lead to cancers such as liver cancer and oral cancer. Cigarette smoking has been shown to be the number one cause of oral cancer as well as lung cancer. It is in your best interest to stop smoking today. Overeating can lead to a greater risk of colon cancer as well as a number of other types of cancer.

Oral hygiene is important and the lack of this will also cause the person to suffer from the disease. All these make a person to understand the need for oral care and other aspects of care of the self. Many people who do not take proper care of their body are the ones who are at a very high risk. The best method that can be used to prevent the disease is the health education and health awareness.

Campaigns by the government are a very important step that will help in the prevention of oral cancer. The use of literature that is given out to groups of people will help the people with risk behavior to try and change their ways. Education of children in their school is an important medium of transmitting the information to the people. As the child learns in school, the parents will get to know of the information if it is passed on to them. This way, the whole community learns of the methods of preventing oral cancer as the information spreads from one person to another informally.

Health education and awareness by various other methods like mass media, television are some of the other methods of spreading the message. The message should include information about the cause of oral cancer, the signs and symptoms and it should also include the methods that the person can use to get the disease to be treated and cured. This kind of detailed information will help the person to be able to prevent the occurrence of the disease.

There’s nothing more unsettling than sitting in the doctor’s office and hearing the words, you’ve got cancer.Suddenly, a multitude of thoughts go through your mind. You worry about your future, your family, your ability to work, and your chances for survival. Nobody wants to be in that situation. While there’s no absolute guarantee that you won’t get cancer, there are some things you can do to help prevent cancer. Here are some tips to try to avoid getting oral cancer.

1.	Don’t smoke. Smoking is one of the most dangerous and self-destructive habits you can participate in. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, but it can also contribute to oral cancer.

2.	Avoid chewing tobacco. Right up there with smoking, chewing tobacco can increase your chances for cancer. The nicotine in tobacco destroys the inside of your mouth and leaves you susceptible to cancer.

3.	Watch your medications. While most medications are necessary and helpful, you can be cautious about medications you choose to take. For example, certain medications like birth control can cause different symptoms and side effects. If you are experiencing problems with our health, be sure to look into the side effects of birth control.

4.	Get plenty of exercise. We increase our body’s ability to fight disease when we are healthy and strong. Getting plenty of exercise will help you to stay healthy. If you were to get an awful cancer diagnosis, you’ll be better able to fight the disease if your body is strong.

5.	Eat healthy. Take in leafy greens, fruits, and water. Watch your red meat intake and avoid fatty foods. Eating healthy will keep your bodies functioning the way they are supposed to.

6. Brush up your knowledge about the side affects of birth control, as wrong birth control methods can have cancerous side effects too.

For people who receive a cancer diagnosis, it can feel like the weight of the world has been placed on their shoulders. The good news, though, is that more cancers are becoming more treatable than they were in the past. While it’s true that there’s still no cure for cancer, it’s also true that doctors can do more with treatment than they could do before. That mean that people who get a cancer diagnosis have a higher chance of living longer. That’s something to hold onto very tightly of you or a loved one has been diagnosed with cancer.

Of course, what kind of cancer you have is also important to the quality of treatment. Some cancers are more easily treated than others. Some are also slower-growing, and some are more likely to come back. Don’t assume that you can’t be treated, even if you have a fast-growing and/or aggressive form of cancer. There is always something that can be done. Be aware that you might need to consider alternative treatments as well as standard ones to get the most benefit from your cancer treatments. There’s nothing wrong with doing that, as long as your doctor knows about it. That way, you won’t have to worry about one treatment contradicting or conflicting with another one.

Talk openly and honestly with your doctor about your options. They may seem limited, but that’s when alternative choices should also be explored. That will greatly expand the choices that you have and allow you to try much more when it comes to treating your cancer. Don’t give up, because there’s no reason not to keep fighting. If you don’t have family members or close friends to support you, consider joining a support group for people with cancer, so you have others to share your experiences with, as well.

You want to stay healthy, just like everyone else, but can you prevent cancer? It’s a good question, and there are varying answers. Some people think that you can prevent most cancers with a specific type of diet, or by eating a certain kind of food. Others believe that there’s no rhyme or reason with cancer, and there’s no way you can do anything about whether you’ll get it or not. Both opinions seem to be both right and wrong, depending on the type of cancer that you’re talking about.

If you’re talking about things like lung cancer, there are studies that prove things like smoking contributes to it. For other types of cancers, though, it’s much harder to find a link. Some of it may be genetic, but it’s not always possible to find genetic markers for all cancers – and they don’t guarantee that everyone with that genetic deviation will get cancer, they only show which person might be more likely to get it. If you’re genetically predisposed to get a certain type of cancer, that’s something you’d probably want to know about. Of course, not everyone wants that information. Some are afraid to find out, and would rather not know their risk level.

No matter whether you have risk factors for cancer, and no matter whether you choose to find out that information, there are still things you can do to help prevent it and other serious, chronic diseases. If you eat right and stay at a healthy weight, you’re much more likely to be healthier overall. Also, exercise is important. It may not seem like a fun thing to do, but it can help you look and feel better, and can also help you ward off some diseases. Starting an exercise program is a great way to help prevent cancer and other sicknesses.

A group of a thousand people whose lives have been touched by oral cancer will gather in London’s Kensington Park this month in an effort to raise awareness of the disease.
On September 18 the 1,000-strong group will be taking part in the Mouth Cancer Foundation’s annual 10k Mouth Cancer Awareness walk in order to raise the profile of this disease.
The walk, which is billed as “Fifteen Million Steps to Combat Mouth Cancer” (on the assumption that the 10 kilometer walk takes each participant 15,000 steps to complete) is aimed at raising both the profile of the illness and funds to continue work of the foundation.
The walk, a free event open to anyone who wishes to raise awareness of the illness, celebrate their own survival or remember loved ones lost to mouth cancer conditions, is the fifth of its kind. The 10k Mouth Cancer awareness walk also helps to raise much needed money for the organization with participants raising sponsorships from family and friends and last year the event brought in more than £60,000 for the cause.
Mouth cancer accounts for around 8,000 of the cancer diagnoses made each year in the UK and one person in the country dies every five hours as a result of the illness.
The disease, which can present as cancer of the gums, cancer of the tongue, cancer of the mouth or cancer of the throat, has higher mortality rates than other more widely publicized conditions and people who smoke or drink are at greater risk of developing the illness.
If caught early the disease is treatable, but sadly many cases are not uncovered until they reach the later stages or until the cancer has spread to other areas.
Because of this participants and spectators at the event will also be offered the opportunity to take part in free mouth cancer screening to check for signs and symptoms including swelling and tissue irritation.

Scientists have raised concerns over the role of oral sex in the increase in throat cancers in the US.
Traditionally people have considered practices such as drinking alcohol and smoking tobacco products to be the key risk factors in the development of the disease, but now experts are saying that the Human Papilloma Virus (or HPV) is placing an increasing role in increased diagnoses.
HPV, which is a common virus with a number of strains that can cause conditions such as warts, genital warts and verrucas, has already been linked with the development of cervical cancer and can be passed from person to person during sexual contact.
And now doctors are concerned that changes in sexual behavior over the last two decades have led to an increased incidence of HPV related oral cancer such as moth cancer and throat cancer.
Last year the American Association for Cancer Research held a conference to discuss the link between the two conditions and doctors were told that in the 1980s, only 20 percent of patients with oral cancer were found to also be infected with the Human Papilloma Virus, while 60 percent of oral cancer diagnoses today are in HPV positive patients.
Health campaigners are now pushing for education on the issues of oral sex, saying young people need to understand that oral sex is not safe sex – a myth that circulated widely during the early years of the AIDS crisis and one that is still commonly believed by many teenagers.
They believe it is only through education that the numbers of patients who do not drink or smoke being diagnosed with oral cancer of some type can be reduced.
Couples wishing to take part in oral sex are advised to use a barrier method such as a condom or dental dam in order to reduce the risk of infection with HPV and other infections.

Scientists in California have tested a laser device as a potential new weapon in the armory against oral cancer, such as mouth cancer and throat cancer.
Researchers from the University of California, Davis joined forces with doctors at the university’s Cancer Centre to test a probe that is hoped will help to speed up oral cancer diagnosis.
The device, which uses fiber optic technology to agitate cells in suspicious areas before detecting the way in which the cells responds and analyzing their behavior for signs of possible cancerous changes, has been compared against traditional methods of diagnosis.
Currently patients suspected of suffering from oral cancer have to undergo more invasive procedures, where a sample of suspect tissue is removed under local anesthetic and sent to the lab for analysis, with results taking days to arrive.
However, if proven effective, the new probe could be a great tool in the early detection of the disease, which currently sees as many as 43,000 new diagnoses in the US every year.
With oral cancers on the rise, a trend that has been blamed on a number of factors from increased alcohol consumption to smoking and even oral sex (as a result of Human Papilloma Virus infection) oncologists are welcoming any advances that may lead to simpler screening for cancerous changes, as well as pushing for greater awareness of the condition its symptoms and causes.
Professor Laura Marcu who worked on the development of the new laser commented that patients were much more aware of other cancers for which screening programs and practices are commonplace.
The results of the study were recently published in a medical journal and have been welcomed by health campaigners pushing for further research into this fast growing medical problem.
The laser technology may also be used in future to help cancer surgeons detect the edges of existing tumors during removal.

Doctors in India are turning to technology to help them in the fight against oral cancer, it has been revealed. Medics in the Asian country have joined forces with a US-based research group SANA to try and diagnose mouth cancer and other oral cancer conditions in Indian patients using mobile phone technology.
Under the cutting edge scheme healthcare professionals at selected locations will be supplied with Smart Phones that have been loaded with special software to guide them through the diagnostic process.
Patients will be taken through medical questionnaires to assess their risk factors and any suspicious looking tissue in the mouth can be documented using the phone’s camera application.
The phones will also be able to store and send data from other routine tests such as ECGs, x-rays, ultrasounds and scans.
The ingenious smart phone program will allow doctors on site at hospital and clinics across the country to make their own diagnoses using the available programs or, if in doubt, they can opt to use the technology to upload data to specialists at the base in Narayana for advice or second opinions.
Doctors can then use the phones to conduct audio or video consultations with their patients with expert consultants virtually present.
It is hoped that the scheme will help in the fight to arrest the rise of oral cancers the most common cancers among the country’s population, a trend that has been blamed on a range of factors from poor oral hygiene to tobacco consumption.
The medical director in charge of the hospital where the scheme is based, Dr Paul Salins said the scheme had already managed to screen around 400 patients and that the smart phone diagnosis technique had already picked up on a number of abnormalities.
Doctors involved in the scheme have praised the way in which it gives patients access to expert opinions with no need to travel.

Tobacco chewers are being encouraged to quit with the help of a new website.
Recently launched site mylastdip.com is aimed at habitual users of smokeless tobacco – one indicated cause of oral cancer conditions such as mouth cancer and throat cancer.
Funded by the National Cancer Institute the website offers an exciting approach to quitting smokeless tobacco use in the hopes of helping to reduce the incidence of oral cancers.
Aimed at the 12 million or so smokeless tobacco users in the US, mylastdip.com is unique in its approach to the problem of this kind of tobacco use, and is one of the few resources out there that speciafically targets young users – with many existing programs catering only to the needs of the older and entrenched smokeless tobacco user.
It is hoped that by targeting use in the younger generation, the scheme will be able to make a positive dent in the future figures for use of chewing tobacco.
The site has two specially tailored progams – one that is aimed at the younger users of chewing tobacco (those aged between 14 and 25) and a second program that is created for the more mature user aged 26 and over.
With free access to the programs, which offer help and support to those who have made the decision to quit smokeless tobacco use, the site hopes to be a tool in the weaponry against the rapidly increasing rate of oral cancer diagnosis in the US.
With mouth and throat cancer detections standing at around 40,000 each year across the country, health campaigners have welcomed this additional ammunition to help arrest the rising oral cancer figures.
Users of the site will be offered online help and advice to assist them in stopping the use of this oral cancer causing substance and will also be able to access internet forums where they can share journey to being free of smokeless tobacco with other site-users.

A UK Throat Cancer sufferer received a £300,000 ($460,000) settlement after he claimed doctors failed to diagnose oral cancer in time to save his speech.
Stephen Quinn was awarded the amount in an out of court without prejudice agreement after he claimed that his doctor had not taken action soon enough when he went to him complaining of a swollen lump in his neck and querying whether it could be cancer.
The former paper-mill worker, who attended his local clinic for checkups on a regular basis because he was concerned that exposure to dust and chemical throughout his career could have had a negative impact on his health, first raised concerns over is symptoms in May of 2003.
However it took until the following year for the now 56-year-old to receive a diagnosis of throat cancer.
The patient was then told that he would need surgery to treat the throat cancer, which sadly resulted in his loss of speech.
Mr Quinn spoke of his anger at the delay, which he believed has resulted in the lasting damage and said that a specialist had told that his condition might have been treated with non-invasive chemotherapy techniques, thus preserving his voice, had it been caught sooner.
Now working as watch seller in a market, the oral cancer survivor said that the money could not bring his voice back and spoke at his sadness of not being able to give a father of the bride speech at his daughter’s recent wedding.
However Mr Quinn is now turning his hand to helping support research to help future cancer patients and is working with charity cancer research UK to help promote one of their fundraising initiatives in Wales.
He added that his life would be very different and more normal if his doctors had reacted more speedily to his concerns in the first place.

Experts in Taiwan are blaming a rise in the rate of oral cancer on the popular habit of chewing betel nut as well as smoking and drinking alcohol.
Taiwanese health professionals have seen oral cancer rates rise by four times in the the last four decades, making oral cancer conditions such as mouth cancer and throat cancers one of the 10 top causes of death in the country.
One public health researcher, Dr Liao Yung-po carried out a study that revealed a rise of 280 percent in deaths resulting from oral cancer conditions and also discovered that the risk of death from the disease for males was quadruple that of females.
Dr Yung-po has now called on the government to take action to halt the rising death toll from oral cancer.
The majority of the cancers seen throughout the study were squamous cell carcinomas – a variant of the disease that is ofen associated with substance use such as tobacco smoking, drinking alcohol and chewing betel nut – the fruit of the areca tree which is prepared and mixed with tobacco for oral use.
Chewing betel nut is a traditional practice in many Asian countries, where the practice is believed to produce benefits such as reducing tiredness and making users more alert – manual workers often chew betel nut to help them through their tasks while the product is also considered something of a traditional remedy to increase appetite and aid digestion.
However in studies of animals and human cells, the plant has been shown to have been instrumental in the development of cancerous changes to cells.
Dr Yung-po said the increase in oral cancer deaths was “alarming” and repeated requests for the country’s health authorities to act to bring the situation under control and prevent further unnecessary deaths from oral cancer conditions such as mouth and throat cancers.

Rising oral cancer levels in Yemen are being attributed to the local habit of chewing on the qat leaf for comfort and stimulation, it was reported this week.
As part of the local culture, qat chewing is a widely accepted practice indulged in by people from all walks of life as a way to relax at the end of the day or to combat tiredness.
The leaves of the qat plant are chewed raw releasing their juices into the mouth, which cause users to feel more alert and can give feelings of euphoria.
But Yemeni organisation the National Foundation to Support Cancer Patients has expressed concerns over the widespread practice, which they believe to be a key factor in the swiftly rising diagnosis rate for oral cancers including gum cancer and mouth cancer. Top local cancer doctor Nadeem Mohammed Saeed explained that around a third of the cancer cases treated at his clinic in the county’s capital were oral cancer conditions.
The qat leaf, which has effects similar to banned amphetamines when chewed, is highly addictive and estimates say that as many as seven out of ten households in the country have at least one qat user.
The crop has been grown in Yemen for five centuries and over half of the country’s fertile land is dedicated to the growing of the plant, which has already been banned by some neighboring states.
But now experts are expressing concern over the use of chemicals to prevent insect infestation of the crops, claiming that it is this that has precipitated the steep rise in oral cancer rates in recent years.
The additional oral cancer cases are threatening to overwhelm the country’s one specialized oncology centre – which has only 56 beds and funding for only half of the patients presenting at its doors each month. Dr Saeed said the figures were “frightening”

Drugs used in the treatment of the brittle bone condition osteoporosis have been linked to an increased risk of some types of throat cancers, it was revealed this week.
The risk of oral cancer conditions of the throat may be increased by regular use of oral bisphosphonates, a commonly prescribed treatment for those at risk, or suffering from osteoporosis, a condition characterized by a loss of bone density in sufferers, researchers claim.
Scientists from Oxford University in the UK carried out a study of around six million patients by analysing their medical records including prescription records over a period of time.
The study concluded that the risk of esophageal or throat cancer diagnosis rose by a third amongst those who had been prescribed the drugs at one time or another, while those who had been taking the oral bisphosphonates over a longer period of time (and who had received at least ten prescriptions for the drug) were twice as likely to develop the oral cancer condition than those who had never been prescribed oral bisphosphonates.
The news is likely to come as a concern those who are taking the drugs are part of a treatment or prevention plan, but doctors have warned that patients already prescribed oral bisphosphonates should not stop taking the drug out of fear of developing oral cancer unless advised to by a healthcare professional . Many physicians have already claimed the study was not enough to prove a definite link between the two.
Those taking the treatment are instead advised to talk to their doctor in the event that they experience any irritation of the throat or gastro-intestinal tract such as pain when they swallow or persistent heartburn.
Doctors themselves have been advised to continue with prescription of the drugs where indicated, while one osteoporosis expert Ethel Siris MD has gone as far as to call the study’s conclusions “unproven” and “highly questionable”.

UK residents are being advised to be on the lookout for symptoms of oral cancer conditions.
The British Dental Health Foundation has launched a campaign urging all patients to stay alert to the signs of possible oral cancer conditions such as cancer of the mouth, cancer of the tongue, cancer of the throat and cancer of the gums.
The organisation has taken action to highlight the risks from oral cancers after concerns were raised that oral cancer conditions do not received the same amount of publicity as other types of cancer despite high diagnosis rates and many people indulging in habits that can increase the risks such as smoking and drinking.
In a statement to the press the British Dental Health Foundation advised that catching oral cancer conditions early was key to successful treatment, and added that currently most patients do not received a diagnosis until they are in the later stages of the disease, a situation that impacts on the likelihood of survival.
The news comes as veteran Hollywood Actor Michael Douglas revealed he is suffering from a stage four throat cancer and receiving radiation and chemotherapy treatments.
Advice from the British Dental Health Foundation is that all patients should see their dental surgeon regularly, which not only helps keep a good level of oral health, but also allows for checks for any oral cancer symptoms to be carried out.
Patients were also warned to be on the lookout for changes such as patches of red or white on the tissues in the mouth, persistent ulcers or any unusual swelling of the face, and neck.
Anyone who discovers any suspicious changes is urged to see their dentist as a priority so that possible oral cancer such as mouth cancer, gum cancer, tongue cancer or throat cancer can be ruled out as soon as possible.

Health campaigners across the world are urging patients to be on the lookout for possible signs and symptoms of oral cancer conditions after the announcement that Hollywood star Michael Douglas is being treated for a stage four cancer of the throat.
The plight of the global superstar has thrown oral cancer conditions into the spotlight and health care professionals are using the news as an opportunity to remind fans of the veteran actor of the importance of vigilance in the fight against oral cancer conditions such as throat cancer, mouth cancer, gum cancer and tongue cancer.
The 65-year-old Wall Street star appeared on a US talk show this week and confirmed he is currently receiving radiation treatment and chemotherapy in an effort to combat the advance tumor that has developed at his tongues base.
The revelation has sparked calls from cancer campaigners across the world for patients to be more vigilant for early warning signs of oral cancer conditions.
Patients are being urged to seek the advice of their dentist in the event that they notice any suspicious changes to their oral cavity, including red or white patchy areas on the gums, cheeks or tongue and swellings anywhere in the mouth or throat.
The advice is particularly relevant to those who have indulged in habits such as drinking and smoking through during their lives, as these practices are seen as common aggravating factors in the development of oral cancer conditions.
In the event that people notice any worrying changes they are advised to immediately bring their concerns to the attention of their dentist or doctor who can carry out checks to rule out or confirm oral cancers.
Experts emphasize that early detection is key in the treatment of oral cancer, which can often be cured if treatments are started in time.

How are your teeth doing today? If they are strong, healthy and attractive, that’s great. If they are not so great, that can actually pose a host of problems beyond just ending your modeling career. Did you know that the state of your teeth can be a major indicator of the state of your overall health? You probably did, because you’re a smart person. But did you know that traditional cigarettes are just horrible for your teeth? They do a lot more than just make them all yellow with the tar content they hold in there. They are actually bad for your overall oral health, from a systemic standpoint.

Did you know that cigarettes contribute to more than just lung cancer and emphysema? While those two ailments (either one of which can kill you on its own) are really bad, they are only two of a myriad number of illnesses that smoking traditional cigarettes can bring about in your life. Among the others are oral cancer and throat cancer, both of which come from the carcinogenic effect of the cigarettes in your mouth. All of those toxins have an impact on anything and everything that they touch. So you might need to try out another kind of option, if you want to maintain your oral health. With a bad mouth, bad teeth are going to be a given.

Have you ever thought about trying electronic cigarettes, which do not have all of the poisons in them that regular cigs possess? If you haven’t, you really should at least consider it. One really cool part of the deal is that you can buy electronic cigarettes online, which makes the process extremely convenient for you. If you have been thinking that your grill could use an upgrade, a great start to that is by upgrading the type of cigarette you smoke to something better on your teeth.

Perhaps you know someone in your life who is suffering from a crippling addiction to drugs and alcohol. You worry about the health effects–oral cancer, liver, cancer, lung cancer. You have begged, pleaded and even prayed that he would see the light and come to the path of sobriety, and for one reason or another your prayers were answered. The person you love admitted he had a problem and is about to enter a drug rehab program. You might be overjoyed but there is also a part of you that is scared to death for him. What if your loved get the horrible news he/she has orla cancer and turns back to drugs? Or worse? There is no telling how bad things are going to get from here on out and as you may well know there are more than enough horror stories out there of people who went through torture in rehab. So you might be wondering what’s in store for your loved one as they begin this painful process.

When people check-in to a rehab facility, they go through a physical examination as well as being required to empty out the contents of their personal belongings. This is for two reasons: the physical examination is to make sure the doctors know what the patient’s vital signs look like as well as knowing exactly what their blood work looks like, so they can be aware if there is any drugs currently in the system as well as any other ailments that might impede a patient’s progress.

The reason why patients must have their belongings searched is because many addicts will try and sneak drugs into the facility, which can compromise everyone’s sobriety. However, once the examinations have been done, the patients are allowed to unpack and get situated. They will not go to group on the first day and they will not go into one-on-one counseling. The road ahead for the addict is hard but the first day is made to be as easy as possible.
