It is impossible to see every angle of your mouth to know when something is wrong. Often, the first clue is a pain; however, it is very hard to tell whether it is a simple problem that is easily fixed or a more devastating diagnosis, such as oral cancer. This where the dentist employs all the tools of the trade to fix what is wrong.

One of those tools is gathering all the information possible once oral cancer is suspected. The dentist uses X-rays, a physical exam and healthcare informatics to determine the diagnosis of cancer. The X-rays give an underlying visual picture of the mouth, the physical exam is the basic evaluation of the teeth and gums, and healthcare informatics is a collaboration of knowledge about the cancer and the patient’s history.

With this knowledge, the dentist can determine the precise area the cancer is in, how big the cancer is and the best approach to either removing the cancer or treating it. While it is little comfort to hear such a diagnosis made, it does help to hear that the dentist has a plan of action for the cancer.

It is through the advances in technology and information that dentists have the tools to detect oral cancer early on. Treatment can minimize the area in your mouth that is affected, and technology can increase the chance that the cancer can be successfully treated. Taking this into consideration, you can see why it is important to make regular trips to the dentist to ensure that your mouth stays in a healthy condition.

According to a latest research, there are a lot of people who are suffering from oral cancer. It is very easy to take care of your dental health by following some easy practices such as proper brushing, flossing and taking right food and the likes. But still, if you suffer from oral cancer, the first step to cure it is to detect it in its initial phase. If a person is able to detect it in its initial period, then, it can be easily cured with the help of your dentist. Here are some signs of oral cancer which should not be ignored.

If you have a sore in your mouth and you are taking medicine to cure it but still it bleeds often and is taking too much time in healing, this can be a warning bell for oral cancer, thus, you should consult your dentist without any delay.

Many people ignore red, white or pink patches in their mouth or on the lips, thinking this can be the result of something they ate in their meal. In this case, they ignore it and leave to be healed itself. However, this is a symptom of oral cancer; therefore, bring it to the notice of your dentist, as soon as you observe such patches.

Tenderness in the mouth or near the lip area which cause pain or gets numb without any reason is another sign of oral cancer. If you are not able to swallow food or swallowing of food is causing pain, then, you should get it checked immediately. If you are finding it difficult to wear your dentures or weaning it is causing pain, then, do not ignore.

While most people make an annual trip to the doctor for a health physical, many are avoiding the dentist for various reasons. Regular trips to the dentist are an important part of detecting and then preventing Oral Cancer.

A yearly visit to the dentist is a superb way for this dental-health professional to assess not only the health of your teeth, but also detect any early signs of oral cancer.

It’s no secret that those who use tobacco products increase their chances of developing oral cancer. If you think the only tobacco product that can cause oral cancer is smokeless tobacco or chew (sometimes called snuff), you would be mistaken. Smoking cigarettes also greatly increases the chances of developing oral cancer as the ingestion of the tobacco product is nearly as harmful as chewing tobacco. Electronic cigarettes have become a healthier option for smokers who are concerned about developing this cancer of the mouth.

The most common sign of Oral Cancer would be finding a sore in the mouth. It’s important to pay attention if a sore in your mouth lingers as many people have cold-sores or canker sores especially during the winter months. If you have a sore that persists for more than 10 days, it’s crucial to get to a dentist for early detection.

Oral Cancer is not always detected in the mouth. For some, their first sign of a problem might come in the form of a lump in the neck. The beginnings of oral cancer can just as easily start in the neck as opposed to the mouth.

Other signs of oral cancer can be problems swallowing or a certain loss of feeling sensation in parts of the mouth. For any kind of lumps or loss of feeling or inability to swallow, consult with a physician or a dentist if a problem persist more than a week.

Oral Cancer is also referred to as Lip Cancer, Mouth Cancer, Pharynx Cancer, Oral Cavity Cancer, Mouth Cancer, Sinus Cancer, Cheek Cancer, Tongue Cancer and Throat Cancer.

The American Cancer Society claim that men are two times at risk for the development of Oral Cancer than women. Men who are over 50 years old are deemed at the greatest risk.

By nature Cancer is defined as cells which grow uncontrollably invading and damaging all surrounding tissues. When one has oral cancer it begins with a sore or growth that remains perpetually. When it is not diagnosed or treated in a timely manner it can become life threatening.

In its earliest stages Oral Cancer can actually go unnoticed, thus making it incredibly dangerous. At the start it can be painless, and very little physical changes might be noticed.

There are many symptoms and signs of oral cancer. Some of the most common signs include thickening and swelling of the area in question, rough and eroded areas located among the gums, lips, exterior, and interior of the oral cavity. The occurrence of white, red or white and red patches within the mouth. Individuals with Oral Cancer might discover numbness without explanation, tenderness and aches and pains (feeling sore and unable to swallow). Throat/Oral Cancer has been known to cause bleeding without cause, a hard time swallowing and chewing.

Other symptoms of Oral Cancer can be dramatic weight loss, a noticeable difference in your bite (the way your teeth seem to fit together,) constant pain in the throat, change or hoarseness in the voice, sores that remain persistent on the neck, face or mouth that have difficulty healing.

Smoking cigarettes, cigars or pipes, using smokeless tobacco products, a family history of cancer, heightened exposure to the sun, having HPV, excessive alcohol consumption, and poor diet leave individuals at a greater risk for developing Oral Cancer.

Within the last ten years black raspberries have become a big player in slowing the spread of one of the most common and deadliest cancers- oral cancer. During the last decade the incredible impact of black raspberries on oral cancer have become more and more evident as it has been determined that the berry contains a chemical and antioxidant property (ellagic acid) which acts as an anti tumor agent.

Oral cancer is simply cancer of the mouth which includes the throat, tongue, larynx, and anything associated with the oral cavity, it also sometimes affects the face and neck and can sometimes interfere with an individual’s ability to speak, breathe, and swallow.

Recently rats were injected with cancer-causing substances and then fed a diet rich in berries, it was determined that the berry-fed rats had 80 percent few tumors deemed malignant, whereas rats on a diet lacking in berries faired far worse. In 2002 it was discovered in hamsters that the inclusion of black raspberries in a diet aided in the suppression of tumor development in the mouth and surrounding areas.

Advocate for the reduction of cancer risk via a diet of fruits and veggies, Dr. Gary Stoner of Ohio State University believes that if research continues in a positive direction that the black raspberry could legitimately aid in the role of starting to eliminate not just oral cancers but other cancer strains as well.

Currently there is no hard evidence that black raspberries will cure cancer, slow its onset, or prevent it. but ellagic acid is being sold as a supplement boasting health properties based on studies conducted by Hollings Cancer Center Medical University of South Carolina, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Minnesota and the Ohio State University (which is responsible for conducting the majority of the research and having the most extensive list of accomplishments.)

Once a doctor has determined the diagnosis and stage of oral cancer in a particular individual it is then important for a plan of treatment to be designed to fit the needs of the specific patient. Oral cancer treatments depend upon a range of factors which include size, type, location, and stage of the disease. The patient’s general health and age is also taken into account by the physician. It is then determined whether or not chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery or a combination of the available treatment methods.

Prior to beginning a treatment the majority of patients are required to have a full dental exam. Cancer treatments typically cause the mouth to become more sensitive, and additionally infected more easily. Doctors typically tell patients to have any needed or required dental work taken care of before the start of treatment as once treatment begins it might be too uncomfortable.

It is important for cancer patients to know a significant amount about their disease and choices for treatment so that an active role can be taken in the decision making process. A patient should always ask any and all questions for their physician. Some patients find that making a list of questions prior to the appointment with their physician will make it easier to remember what needs to be asked, and how the doctor responds.

Making decisions regarding treatment can be difficult, a patient might want to have multiple doctors review the diagnosis and the planned course of action for treatment. There is an extensive amount to learn about an individual’s cancer and treatment options. Getting a second opinion will not cause a significant delay in treatment but will give the patient a sound mind when making such a life altering decision.

There are a variety of options, and patients should keep an open mind regarding things such as clinical trials, which might offer up treatment methods that work, and help that are not readily available to the public.

Patients diagnosed with oral cancer are typically treated by a team of physicians and specialists among which could potentially include an ear, nose, and throat surgeon, a general oral surgeon, a radiation oncologist, a medical oncologist, a dentist, a reconstructive surgeon, a dietitian, a nurse, a social or hospice worker and a speech therapist.

Typically treatment begins with surgery designed to remove the tumor for the oral cavity. If it has been determined that the cancer has spread the surgeon will also remove lymph nodes in the neck or conduct more operations if the disease has spread throughout the body.

Some patients are treated utilizing radiation therapy, which capitalizes on the use of high-energy rays from a large machine designed to force the damage of cancer cells and to also hinder further growth. Much like surgery, radiation therapy only damages or works on the cells in the treated area.

Radiation therapy can be administered to patients both before or after surgery. When radiation therapy is utilized before a surgery it helps to shrink the tumor for a greater chance of removal. When used post surgery radiation therapy helps to destroy any potentially remaining cancer cells to reduce the chances of the cancer surviving and continuing to spread.

Sometimes radiation therapy is used alone for tiny tumors located in the mouth, sometimes radiation therapy is used in combination with surgery or even additionally chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy is when a physician uses drugs in an attempt to kill cancerous cells. Researchers are constantly adding new drugs to the combination which might aid in the treatment of oral cancers. Chemotherapy works with other forms of cancer treatment in an attempt to shrink and destroy tumors to prevent the spreading of the disease.

Often times oral cancer is treatable with a variety or combination of these methods.

We use them to pronounce words correctly, chew, bite, rip into things that won’t open, and smile. These tools are important to us, though we rarely spend the time necessary to keep them healthy. Sure, we brush when we wake up, we brush before we go to sleep. However, we never fully understand why we do this. We just know that we were taught to brush and so we do.

As adults, we are more susceptible to life’s elements. We drink tea, coffee, sometimes, we even smoke. With all the knowledge about smoking, we still do it. Forget about the very superficial element of staining on our teeth from smoking and coffee drinking. Let’s talk about the real dangers.

If you have already neglected your teeth for some time, it is important to know that you are already in a dire state for oral medical care. Smoking has only contributed to this problem you have to face. If you have constantly taken proper care of your teeth and are, what some might call, a “nut” about flossing and brushing, you may be able to salvage some oral medical health providing you quit the smoking.

Smoking can contribute to a wide array of negative health conditions. One is Oral Cancer. If you look at images of Oral cancer due to the cancer beginning in other locations and migrating to the mouth, chewing tobacco, or simply an effect of years of smoking, you can easily see how imortant your mouth is to your body. It is not a superficial thing meant simply for smiles. Your mouth needs the same attention you give to the rest of your body. Treat it well.

By flossing, using germ fighting mouthwash, brushing, and fueling your body with water and important nutrients, you will be enabling your body—particularly your mouth—with the right strengthening exercises for any future negative elements. Even if it is as innocent as teeth staining iced tea.

Oral cancer is on the rise. This is in spite of the incidence of smoking going down in some segments of the population. Smoking continues to be a common reason for people to develop oral cancer.

Oral cancer is thought of by many people to simply mean cancer in the mouth. Oral cancer, however, also means cancer of the throat, tongue, lips, pharynx or any part of the oral cavity. In any given year, there are more than 34,000 new cases of oral cancer diagnosed in the United States. Roughly seventy five percent of all cancers of the neck and head begin as oral cancers. This makes it particularly important to visit your doctor and your dentist on a regular basis. These medical professionals can perform pre cancer screenings that can help to catch any cancers before they become to entrenched in your body.

There are several symptoms of oral cancer that you must be aware of. If you notice any of these symptoms or signs, you should visit your primary doctor or your dentist immediately.

1. A sore that does not heal. If you notice a sore in your mouth that does not heal within about two weeks, you should visit your doctor.

2. Numbness in your mouth or throat. An unexplained numbness in your mouth or throat should be evaluated by your dentist or your doctor as soon as possible.

3. White or red sores or patches in the mouth. While these patches can be a symptom of other conditions such as throat infections, it is important to seek a doctor’s advice in order to rule out cancer or other serious conditions.

4. Difficulty swallowing or moving any part of your mouth. If you are having a difficult time moving your jaw or your tongue, or if you find that you can not swallow well, you should seek care from your doctor.

It is a common notion that oral cancer is common in the people who are smokers. It is true that the smokers are the ones who are at a very high risk of being affected by oral cancer, but there are also other people who are at risk of being affected with this disease.

The common causes and risk factors that can cause oral cancer also include the use of alcohol. Any person who drinks a lot will be at risk of being affected by this disease. Oral cancer also affects people who do not smoke, but use tobacco in other forms. The common reason for the oral cancer to occur is the chewing of tobacco. This is a habit that is seen in many of the people in certain developing nations where the growth of tobacco is not limited.

The other people who are at a high risk of being affected with oral cancer are the people who have repeated infections that are viral in nature. The most common viral infection is the Herpes virus. When a person has repeated infections with this virus, it can lead to oral cancer, or at least increase the risk of the cancer to occur.

The other important fact that should be remembered is that though a person may have a risk factor, the risk increases if the person has more than one risk factor. If a person is a smoker and also an alcoholic, then the risk of that person getting oral cancer increases proportionately. Other than the risk factors that have been mentioned already, a person who does not take care of the mouth and oral hygiene will further increase the risk of the disease. Prevention of the risk factors will help to avoid the disease and this is the reason for the various health agencies to try and reduce the risk factors.

Oral cancer is commonly seen in people who are having certain high risk behavior. These high risk behaviors include the use of various substances like tobacco, smoking and alcohol. When a person is an alcoholic or a smoker, the risk of being affected by oral cancer will increase.

Oral hygiene is important and the lack of this will also cause the person to suffer from the disease. All these make a person to understand the need for oral care and other aspects of care of the self. Many people who do not take proper care of their body are the ones who are at a very high risk. The best method that can be used to prevent the disease is the health education and health awareness.

Campaigns by the government are a very important step that will help in the prevention of oral cancer. The use of literature that is given out to groups of people will help the people with risk behavior to try and change their ways. Education of children in their school is an important medium of transmitting the information to the people. As the child learns in school, the parents will get to know of the information if it is passed on to them. This way, the whole community learns of the methods of preventing oral cancer as the information spreads from one person to another informally.

Health education and awareness by various other methods like mass media, television are some of the other methods of spreading the message.
Oral cancer is a common problem. The causes of oral cancer are many. The person who is leading a life that has high risk behavior is one of the main reasons for the occurrence of cancer. The oral cancer as the name indicates is the cancer of the mouth. The disease can be caused by alcohol consumption, viral infection that is repeated, excessive smoking, chewing of tobacco and even the diet habits can lead to oral cancer.

The common doubt that people have is whether the oral cancer can occur in the cheeks or in the tongue. The place where oral cancer can occur is a big question. So where does oral cancer occur? It is not confined to a specific area in the mouth. This is the reason for the disease to be called as the oral cancer. Any part of the mouth can be affected in a person who suffers from oral cancer.

The common part of the mouth that is affected is the junction between the mouth and the neck. This is a severe condition because the person is not able to eat or swallow any of the food that is put into the mouth. Though the mass or sore that is the lesion associated with oral cancer can be formed on the said regions, the lining of the cheek on the inside of the mouth is also the common site for oral cancer.

Oral cancer lesions can also occur in the other parts of the mouth including the gums. The floor of the mouth can also be an area at high risk of cancer formation. The roof of the mouth, the area surrounding the gums, the lips and the tongue are all tissues that can be affected with cancerous sores or growth of tissues that signify oral cancer.

Though oral cancer is thought to have very few signs and symptoms, the truth is the contrary. There are actually many methods in which a person will be able to identify the presence or absence of oral cancer. The most common sign is the presence of a sore in the mouth. The mouth sores can be easily treated with a visit to the dentist or a physician. If you are having a mouth sore that is persistent even after treatment for over a period of two weeks, then the person is having a high chance of suffering from oral cancer.

There are other signs of the disease too. Some people who suffer from oral cancer will have a lump or a mass that is present in the area between the mouth and the neck. Many people have this lump in the neck itself and others might have the mass growing inside their mouth.

A person who is having no other signs of other diseases, but is having problems in swallowing can also be suffering from oral cancer, though just the inability to chew or swallow may be due to other reasons. The other symptoms of oral cancer could include those like the inability to speak. Some people who have the associated nerve injury could also have a loss of sensation of the parts of the mouth.

Though these are the common signs that are associated with oral cancer, there are other people who seem asymptomatic for a long time and hen have one or more of these problems that could be diagnosed as cancer. Any sore or a wound that is not healing should be identified and tracked carefully as it could mean oral cancer. Other than this, the presence of a mass is another sign of oral cancer and needs to be treated accordingly.

A person who wants to prevent oral cancer should try to get a regular examination of the mouth done by a dentist. This will help in the early identification of the disease. The need for the mouth examination is that if it is identified that the person is suffering from oral cancer, then early treatment can be initiated.

Early identification of a disease, treatment and also preventive aspects are the primary methods of overcoming this dangerous disease condition. The oral examination is the best method that can be used to identify the disease. The various methods and steps that are used in the oral examination are listed.

All the dental implants need to be removed first as they might hinder the examination process. The dentist may try to use a gloved hand to feel the various parts of the oral cavity for presence of mass lesions that could signify the presence of oral cancer. Other than the examination of the sides of the mouth, the dentist will also look on the areas like the face, lips, cheeks and the neck as these are the areas where oral cancer are commonly seen.

The tongue is another important part of the oral cavity that should be checked for abnormalities. The dentist will look to see if the tongue is discolored or has any sores or mass lesions. The floor of the mouth and the roof of the mouth also need to be examined as these are also areas where the oral cancer can commonly occur.

Any person who is at a high risk of having oral cancer should make it a point that they meet the dentist very often as this will help in preventing the occurrence of cancer. Even if cancer is diagnosed in these examinations, it can be treated early and completely cured, if it is identified as early as possible.

Oral cancer is a common problem in certain groups of people. It is very common in people who smoke or are alcoholics. Those who do not take proper care of their mouth and oral hygiene can also suffer from oral cancer.
Diagnosis of the oral cancer is a very important method of making sure that the person is treated early. Early treatment of any cancer will increase the prognosis and also the chances of a complete cure increase with early diagnosis.

There are various methods that can be used to diagnose oral cancer. The common methods that can help in the diagnosis include the methods like clinical examination. This is also the first step that is taken in the process of identification of the oral cancer. A person who is suspected to have oral cancer should meet the Physician who will do an examination that includes clinically checking for the presence of any sores, non healing wounds and also for the presence of any tissue or mass in the mouth.

If it is found to have some problem in the clinical examination, then the next step is resorted to. In this step, the person who is suspected to have oral cancer is asked to undergo a series of tests. The first step will also be the one in which the biopsy of the lesion is tested. A biopsy can be an incision one in which an incision is made and the tissue is gathered from that area. Other than the incision biopsy, there could also be other kinds of biopsies undertaken like the brush biopsy or the use of a syringe to remove tissues for testing. Biopsies are the confirmatory tests for the identification of oral cancer. If a person is diagnosed to be suffering from oral cancer, immediate steps need to be taken to treat the condition.

Cancer of the mouth is also called as oral cancer. It is a very difficult condition to treat because of the fact that the disease can spread from the mouth to the other parts of the body too. The oral cancer has various causes. The main causes of the oral cancer are the use of various substances like tobacco and other similar products.

The treatment of Oral cancer also varies according to the cause of the cancer. The most important factor that has to be taken care of is that the person who is suffering from oral cancer should make sure that they stop using the substances that caused the cancer in the first place. This and the prevention of other complications should be the primary goal of the treatment.

Once this is taken care of, the next step of diagnosing the disease and the extent to which it has spread is very important. This can be done by methods like radio diagnosis. Once the identification of the disease in the various parts of the body other than the mouth is seen, then the treatment plan is made.

The first treatment would be chemotherapy. Various drugs in high doses are given to the person who is suffering from the oral cancer. This will prevent the cancer from spreading to the other parts of the body. The use of chemotherapy also has various side effects because the person may have vomiting and nausea because of the high doses of medications.

Radiotherapy or radiation therapy is also alternated with chemotherapy or used as a standalone treatment if it is seen that the disease has spread to various other organs like the lungs. Radiation therapy is also used if the person has liver disease and toxic drugs should not be given.

Surgical excision of the tumor is another option in the treatment of oral cancer.

For people who’ve been diagnosed with oral cancer, support and help are both very important. Of course you want to help your friend of family member, but you also want to support him and be there for the things that you might not be able to help with. On a cancer journey, the person ultimately has to go alone. People can be there to do what they can, but it’s not the same thing as having someone there who’s going through the same things at the same time. There are, though, support groups where people who have cancer can get together and talk with one another.

If you’re dealing with oral cancer, you might want to seek out one of those groups. For people who live in rural areas, these groups might have to be on the Internet instead of in-person. Either way can be beneficial, though, as long as you’re open-minded and willing to talk with other people who’re on the same journey that you’re on. A lot of people are angry when they get a cancer diagnosis. Some of them are also very sad, and very frightened. The reactions really run the gamut of emotions, but most people go through a lot of different feelings about it before they come to accept it.

Oral cancer can be particularly upsetting because of the possibility of disfigurement that comes with it. Sometimes part of the jaw or other areas of the mouth has to be removed, and that can leave people looking different and having trouble with basic things like eating and speaking. Accepting something like that can be very difficult, but you aren’t the only person dealing with the issue. Reaching out to others who are facing the same thing can be very therapeutic for everyone involved.

Prevention of any disease is the best method of making sure that the disease is controlled. There are many diseases that are better prevented because they cause so much of disability and complications that the person may even die of complications. Prevention makes sure that the disease does not occur at all. The governments of various countries are striving to prevent diseases rather than treat the diseases.

As far as the oral cancer is concerned, it is a disease condition that is highly preventable. There are various causes of the disease and simply making sure that these causes are all eliminated will make sure that eh disease does not occur.

The avoidance of the use of various tobacco products will decrease the incidence of oral cancer to a large extent. Many people who are using these products are at a very high risk of getting this kind of cancer. Avoiding smoking will also prevent oral cancer from occurring. Smoking may cause lung cancer commonly, but it has also been seen to cause oral cancer.

Increased consumption of alcohol has also been associated with oral cancer and so if the person avoids using alcohol in large quantities, then the oral cancer can be prevented. The diet that a person consumes is another important factor that will help in the reduction of risk of oral cancer. There are many people who use a lot of spicy food and other kinds of foods that contain preservatives, additives and chemicals. Avoiding such food will help to prevent the occurrence of oral cancer.

It is very important that every precaution is taken to prevent oral cancer as early as possible. It may seem harmless to the uninitiated, but any cancer, including oral cancer, can metastasize, meaning, spread to other parts of the body and cause cancer in a vital area.

Oral cancer is a common problem. The oral cancer includes the growth of cancerous tissue in the mouth. Any of the structures in the mouth including the gums, cheeks and other parts of the mouth are called as oral cancer.

There are various causes for the oral cancer. The person who is suffering from the disease usually has various high risk habits. The most common cause of the oral cancer is the regular smoking. A person who smokes has the cigarette smoke entering the mouth and this leads to the particles settling in the mouth causing an irritation leading to cancer in the mouth.

Chewing tobacco is another common cause of oral cancer. There are many people who have the habit of chewing tobacco either in the processed or unprocessed form. This too can cause irritation in the mouth which can lead to cancer of the mouth.

Alcoholism is rarely associated with the cause of oral cancer, but there are various studies that have seen a high correlation between excessive consumption of alcohol and he occurrence of oral cancer. The reason is that the high consumption of alcohol will cause irritation in the mouth that leads to oral sores and cancer.

Secondary metastases from other parts of the body: though the secondary carcinoma in the mouth is a rare occurrence, it is possible that the person who was suffering from cancer in other parts of the body has a metastasis and this led to the cause of cancer in the mouth.

The lack of proper oral hygiene is another important and common cause of oral cancer. The person who is at a risk of oral cancer should clean the teeth at least two times a day. Other than this, regular flossing and use of a mouthwash will prevent the occurrence of oral cancer.

Oral care is a very important method of preventing oral cancer. There are many people who do not take oral care seriously enough. There are various aspects of oral care that have to be performed adequately. This will reduce the risk of cancer of the mouth from occurring.

The brushing of the teeth is the first and most important aspect of oral care. There are some people who do not brush their teeth at all. This can lead to the formation of tartar on the teeth and then this will progress into infection of the gums. The infection in the gums can also lead to sores in the gums and in the mouth that are a high risk for the oral cancer to occur. Regular brushing of the teeth will prevent this.

The brush that is used to clean the teeth should be very mild and soft. There are some people who use hard and tough brushes that cause more damage than good to the teeth. The tooth paste that is used for the cleaning of the teeth is another aspect that can lead to problems in the mouth. The toothpaste should be strong enough to kill the bacteria that may form a layer on the teeth. This will prevent the occurrence of oral cancer.

Regular flossing of the mouth is also very important as this too will prevent the formation of infection as the flossing will clean the mouth and prevent carcinogens from remaining in the mouth. Other than the brushing and flossing, the use of mouth wash is also important in the prevention of oral cancer. Dental hygiene is maintained by the regular use of a mouth wash. Regular visit to the dentist will also make sure that the oral hygiene is maintained and this in turn will help in reducing the risk of oral cancer from occurring.

The early treatment of oral cancer is very important. Oral cancer may cause death because of bleeding from the sores in the mouth. The cancer in the mouth can also get broken off and the tissues can spread to other parts of the body too. This can cause a lot of damage in the person. The oral cancer is also fatal in many cases unless there are drastic treatment measures undertaken.

The most important method of treatment of oral cancer is the surgical removal of the cancerous tissues in the mouth. There are various structures in the mouth that can be affected by oral cancer. The most common tissues that are affected in the mouth include the gums, the lining of the cheeks, the tongue and other soft tissues. The cancer can caused the abnormal growth of tissues in these parts of the mouth. Once the oral cancer has been identified, it is very important for the tissues that are cancerous to be removed as soon as possible. This will prevent further damage from occurring.

The surgical treatment for oral cancer depends on the risk involved. If there is a risk of the cancer causing secondary cancer in other parts of the body, then the surgical removal is indicated. There are many instances where the cancer is small and so it can be treated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which are the other treatments for oral cancer.

The dentist will be able to perform a surgery or a surgeon will be able to remove the cancer. There are instances where a surgical oncologist removes the tumor from the mouth. Each of them is qualified to remove the tumor, though a surgical oncologist is a much more qualified person to remove the tissues causing oral cancer in the mouth. Surgical removal of the tissues is followed by more chemotherapy to completely cure the oral cancer.

Health campaigners are calling for mouthwash manufacturers to lower the alcohol content of their products after an Australian study found that there could be a link between high alcohol mouthwashes and oral cancer conditions.
The calls come as oral cancer diagnosis levels reach more than 30,000 each year in the US, a rise that has been blamed on a range of factors from smoking and drinking to HPV infection from oral sex.
Researchers at Melbourne University carried out the investigation into a possible link between mouthwash use and the development of oral cancer after it was noted that some patients presenting with oral cancer conditions including mouth cancer and throat cancer did not smoke or drink, factors traditionally associated with the development of the disease, but did use alcohol containing mouthwashes.
The study found that carcinogenic substances could gather in the oral cavity as a result of rinsing with alcohol based mouthwashes which range in alcoholic strength to a maximum of 26 percent.
It also noted that the ethanol present in some products could be instrumental in leaving oral cavity tissue vulnerable to other environmental carcinogens – a particular risk for those who use alcoholic mouthwashes as well as drinking, smoking or chewing tobacco products. The report authors concluded that heavy drinkers who also used alcohol based mouthwash products could increase their oral cancer risk as much as fivefold.
Following the publication of the study in 2009 top Australian research dentist Camille Farah from the University of Queensland issued a recommendation that alcohol based mouthwashes should only be used for restricted periods of time where medically indicated and called for a change to the rules to prevent the over the counter sale of such products for general use.
The study comes 18 years after US National Cancer Institute research suggested there could be a link between the use of this product and oral cancer conditions, such as mouth cancer and gum cancer.

Following the revelation that Hollywood heavyweight Michael Douglas is suffering from a stage four throat cancer tumor, health campaigners are urging people to be alert to any possible signs and symptoms of oral cancer conditions.
In the light of the news about the 65-year-old veteran actors conditions, health campaigners have redoubled efforts to promote awareness of oral cancer conditions – which account for more that 30,000 new cancer cases each year in the US.
With orals cancer conditions such as mouth cancer, throat cancer and gum cancer representing three percent of cancer cases in the US, a figure that has been climbing over recent decades due to tobacco use, heavy drinking and increased infection with the cancer-causing human papilloma virus due to oral sex practices, doctors are calling for all patients to exercise vigilance and be proactive in the fight against the disease.
Patients are advised to have regular appointment with their dentist, who is best qualified to spot signs and symptoms of oral cancer conditions, and also to carry out periodical self check for warning signs of the disease.
To self check patients should position themselves in front of a mirror in a well lit area and first look and feel for any unusual lumps or swellings in the face and neck.
Patients can then use their thumb and forefinger to gently squeeze their cheeks and lips to check for any areas of thickening.
Next patients should pull their lips away from their gums and check for any discoloration or other suspicious looking areas, the same should be done for the inside of the cheeks, the tongue and the palate, or roof of the mouth.
Anyone who discovers anything of concern should consult their dentist or doctor immediately so that further tests can be carried out.
Patients are reminded that oral cancer conditions can be more successfully treated when discovered in the earlier stages.

Health authorities in Pakistan have followed the western lead an introduced picture based health warning on all tobacco products sold in the country.
Following the example set by countries including the UK, Hong Kong and Brazil, the country has ordered tobacco product manufacturers to print disturbing images of the damage that can be caused by tobacco smoking, such as oral cancer conditions including mouth cancer tumors, on 40 percent of their products such as cigarettes, rolling and chewing tobacco.
It is hoped that the images will acts as a deterrent to those who smoke or chew tobacco, persuading them to consider giving up the habit, which is a leading cause in the rising toll of oral cancer conditions in the country. Officials are also trying to dissuade new users from taking up habits that could leave them at risk of oral cancer conditions such as mouth cancer and throat cancer.
Tobacco users purchasing products will now find themselves confronted with unpleasant images of the effects of oral cancer – including decaying flesh and tumors.
The move has been welcomed by health campaigners in neighboring India who are waiting for similar shock tactics to be introduced in an attempt to halt the march of oral cancer conditions there, with mouth and throat cancers being the most common cancer condition affecting the country. The roll out of picture based warnings in India has already been postponed once and is now expected to begin in December.
Currently only two percent of tobacco users ever manage to give up the unhealthy habit in the country. Indian oral cancer campaigner Dr Suwas Darvekar explains on his website www.oralcancerawareness.org that it is important to educate on the effect of the effects of tobacco use and allow patients to make informed choices as many mouth and throat cancers are, in his words, “completely preventable”.

A group of a thousand people whose lives have been touched by oral cancer will gather in London’s Kensington Park this month in an effort to raise awareness of the disease.
On September 18 the 1,000-strong group will be taking part in the Mouth Cancer Foundation’s annual 10k Mouth Cancer Awareness walk in order to raise the profile of this disease.
The walk, which is billed as “Fifteen Million Steps to Combat Mouth Cancer” (on the assumption that the 10 kilometer walk takes each participant 15,000 steps to complete) is aimed at raising both the profile of the illness and funds to continue work of the foundation.
The walk, a free event open to anyone who wishes to raise awareness of the illness, celebrate their own survival or remember loved ones lost to mouth cancer conditions, is the fifth of its kind. The 10k Mouth Cancer awareness walk also helps to raise much needed money for the organization with participants raising sponsorships from family and friends and last year the event brought in more than £60,000 for the cause.
Mouth cancer accounts for around 8,000 of the cancer diagnoses made each year in the UK and one person in the country dies every five hours as a result of the illness.
The disease, which can present as cancer of the gums, cancer of the tongue, cancer of the mouth or cancer of the throat, has higher mortality rates than other more widely publicized conditions and people who smoke or drink are at greater risk of developing the illness.
If caught early the disease is treatable, but sadly many cases are not uncovered until they reach the later stages or until the cancer has spread to other areas.
Because of this participants and spectators at the event will also be offered the opportunity to take part in free mouth cancer screening to check for signs and symptoms including swelling and tissue irritation.

Drinking coffee could lower the risk of oral cancer conditions, a study in Japan revealed.
The research, carried out by scientists at Tohoku University in Sendai, found that drinking just one cup of coffee a day may lower patients chances of developing oral cancer conditions such as mouth cancer and throat cancer.
In a study that analyzed the dietary habits of as many as 38,000 people between the ages of 40-years-old and 64-years-old and followed patients over the next 13 years experts looked at the oral cancer trends, concentrating on those who were diagnosed with cancers of the mouth and throat.
They found that, of the original 38,000 participants, 157 subjects went on to develop oral cancer conditions such as mouth and throat cancer.
Analysis of the original reported dietary habits and coffee consumption of these subjects seemed to indicate that those who consumed at least one cup of the beverage, which is a popular drink in Japan, each day were half as likely to develop the disease.
And, shockingly, the same results held true even for high risk patients, including those who were habitual users of tobacco and alcohol – two recognized causative factors in the development of the disease.
Lead researcher Dr Toru Naganuma said the results of the study, published in 2009, were surprising and that those involved in the research had never expected such a dramatic indication that coffee consumption could be indicated as a preventative factor in the fight against oral cancer conditions.
He expressed his team’s shock that the results had seemed to indicate so clearly that everyone could benefit from the habit, regardless of their other lifestyle choices.
The study, which others have warned may only be indicative of the effects within the Japanese population, concluded that while quitting smoking and reducing alcohol consumption remained the primary ways in which patients could protect themselves against the risks of oral cancer coffee consumption could also possibly indicated as a preventative measure.

Men should consume more citrus fruits and drink more citrus-derived fruit juices if they want to lower their chances of oral cancer, experts claim.
The advice, which recommends males increase their intake of vitamin C rich citrus varieties of fruit such as oranges, lemons and grapefruit, is based on a 2006 study that revealed men who consumed more of these types of food were less likely to develop a mouth condition called oral pre-malignant lesions (OPLs).
OPLs are known to be a common precursors to the aggressive squamous cell carcinoma forms of oral cancer conditions such as mouth and throat cancer. As many as four OPLs in every 10 discovered go on to develop into full blown oral cancer.
But in a study carried out over 16 years researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health examined the diets of more than 40,000 men in America. The men from all walks of life completed detailed surveys of their consumption habits every four years.
Of the more than 40,000 participants, 207 presented with OPLs over the course of the study and those who regularly consumed citrus fruits and citrus fruit juices as well as other vitamin C rich foods were found to be 30 to 40 percent less likely to be affected by the precancerous condition.
The results were also applicable to those that indulged in lifestyle habits traditionally associated with the development of oral cancer conditions such as smoking or drinking, although it remains generally recognized that ceasing alcohol and tobacco consumption are the greatest preventative measures that can be taken to avoid oral cancer conditions.
The conclusion of the study, which was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology stated that it was appropriate to recommend increased consumption of the vitamin C rich citrus fruits and juices as a means of preventing OPLs and the resulting oral cancer conditions.

Oral cancer conditions have hit the news this week with the revelation that 65-year-old Hollywood actor Michael Douglas is undergoing radiation treatment and chemotherapy for a tumor in his throat.
And while health campaigners are using the news to promote oral cancer awareness as they fight to stem the rising tide of oral cancer diagnoses, which topped 35,000 in the US last year, the disease remains one with a low media profile, despite the fact that it kills more sufferers that many better known cancers including cervical and testicular cancers.
That oral cancer remains off the public radar as a rule is surprising considering the list of famous names who have suffered or survived the disease over the years.
In 1960 literary legend Aldous Huxley was diagnosed with throat cancer – he later lost his speech to the illness which finally claimed his life on November 22 1963.
Baseball hero Babe Ruth suffered from an oral cancer condition that was to spread to other areas of his body leaving him so weakened that he succumbed to pneumonia in 1948 aged only 53
Former Beatle George Harrison was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1997 – a condition he blamed on years of tobacco smoking, the cancer was successfully treated but the singer later went on to develop a fatal lung cancer.
Hollywood legend Humphrey Bogart also suffered from oral cancer which began in his throat and went on the spread to other areas of his body.
Las Vegas legend and brat pack singer Sammy Davis Jnr developed throat cancer late in his career, he was offered lifesaving surgery that carried a risk of losing his ability to speak (and therefore to sing) and so decline the treatment – he died in 1990 aged 64.
Screen siren Lana Turner, a well known heavy smoker whose husky tones seduced fans across the world also fell victim to oral cancer and died in 1995 aged 74.

Scientists in California have tested a laser device as a potential new weapon in the armory against oral cancer, such as mouth cancer and throat cancer.
Researchers from the University of California, Davis joined forces with doctors at the university’s Cancer Centre to test a probe that is hoped will help to speed up oral cancer diagnosis.
The device, which uses fiber optic technology to agitate cells in suspicious areas before detecting the way in which the cells responds and analyzing their behavior for signs of possible cancerous changes, has been compared against traditional methods of diagnosis.
Currently patients suspected of suffering from oral cancer have to undergo more invasive procedures, where a sample of suspect tissue is removed under local anesthetic and sent to the lab for analysis, with results taking days to arrive.
However, if proven effective, the new probe could be a great tool in the early detection of the disease, which currently sees as many as 43,000 new diagnoses in the US every year.
With oral cancers on the rise, a trend that has been blamed on a number of factors from increased alcohol consumption to smoking and even oral sex (as a result of Human Papilloma Virus infection) oncologists are welcoming any advances that may lead to simpler screening for cancerous changes, as well as pushing for greater awareness of the condition its symptoms and causes.
Professor Laura Marcu who worked on the development of the new laser commented that patients were much more aware of other cancers for which screening programs and practices are commonplace.
The results of the study were recently published in a medical journal and have been welcomed by health campaigners pushing for further research into this fast growing medical problem.
The laser technology may also be used in future to help cancer surgeons detect the edges of existing tumors during removal.

Scientists in the UK are trialing a new test that hopes to be able to diagnose oral cancers in just 20 minutes.
The group, from the University of Sheffield, have developed a simple mouth swab screen that they hope will be able to replace the current, more invasive, testing methods which involve taking a small skin sample from the inside of the mouth under local anesthetic and sending it away for analysis – a process that can take up to a week.
With increasing concerns are over the alarming rise in oral cancers, which have gone up by 28 percent in male over-forties and 24 percent in women of the same age in the past decade, according to charity Cancer Research UK, it is hoped the new test could be the possible key to extended oral screening as well as faster cancer detection and earlier treatments.
The news is being welcomed by health campaigners who have issued calls for people to be more aware of the dangers of oral cancers in the wake of the revelation that Michael Douglas is suffering from a stage four cancer of the throat.
Currently in the trial stage, the test is carried out by taking a swab from any suspicious areas in the mouth and transferring cells to a small chip, which is then placed in a reading machine for analysis.
Results are returned in as little as eight minutes – allowing healthcare providers to make a swift diagnosis and begin essential treatment as soon as possible.
Research team leader Professor Martin Thornhill explained that the group was currently carrying out a study to compare the new testing results against traditional methods of diagnosis.
He said that the team hoped the technology would eventually be rolled out to doctors and dental professionals to help them carry out spot checks on suspicious areas with minimal stress to the patient, who will no longer have to wait while samples are analysed and can be quickly reassured in the event that no abnormalities are uncovered.

Doctors in India are turning to technology to help them in the fight against oral cancer, it has been revealed. Medics in the Asian country have joined forces with a US-based research group SANA to try and diagnose mouth cancer and other oral cancer conditions in Indian patients using mobile phone technology.
Under the cutting edge scheme healthcare professionals at selected locations will be supplied with Smart Phones that have been loaded with special software to guide them through the diagnostic process.
Patients will be taken through medical questionnaires to assess their risk factors and any suspicious looking tissue in the mouth can be documented using the phone’s camera application.
The phones will also be able to store and send data from other routine tests such as ECGs, x-rays, ultrasounds and scans.
The ingenious smart phone program will allow doctors on site at hospital and clinics across the country to make their own diagnoses using the available programs or, if in doubt, they can opt to use the technology to upload data to specialists at the base in Narayana for advice or second opinions.
Doctors can then use the phones to conduct audio or video consultations with their patients with expert consultants virtually present.
It is hoped that the scheme will help in the fight to arrest the rise of oral cancers the most common cancers among the country’s population, a trend that has been blamed on a range of factors from poor oral hygiene to tobacco consumption.
The medical director in charge of the hospital where the scheme is based, Dr Paul Salins said the scheme had already managed to screen around 400 patients and that the smart phone diagnosis technique had already picked up on a number of abnormalities.
Doctors involved in the scheme have praised the way in which it gives patients access to expert opinions with no need to travel.

Experts in Taiwan are blaming a rise in the rate of oral cancer on the popular habit of chewing betel nut as well as smoking and drinking alcohol.
Taiwanese health professionals have seen oral cancer rates rise by four times in the the last four decades, making oral cancer conditions such as mouth cancer and throat cancers one of the 10 top causes of death in the country.
One public health researcher, Dr Liao Yung-po carried out a study that revealed a rise of 280 percent in deaths resulting from oral cancer conditions and also discovered that the risk of death from the disease for males was quadruple that of females.
Dr Yung-po has now called on the government to take action to halt the rising death toll from oral cancer.
The majority of the cancers seen throughout the study were squamous cell carcinomas – a variant of the disease that is ofen associated with substance use such as tobacco smoking, drinking alcohol and chewing betel nut – the fruit of the areca tree which is prepared and mixed with tobacco for oral use.
Chewing betel nut is a traditional practice in many Asian countries, where the practice is believed to produce benefits such as reducing tiredness and making users more alert – manual workers often chew betel nut to help them through their tasks while the product is also considered something of a traditional remedy to increase appetite and aid digestion.
However in studies of animals and human cells, the plant has been shown to have been instrumental in the development of cancerous changes to cells.
Dr Yung-po said the increase in oral cancer deaths was “alarming” and repeated requests for the country’s health authorities to act to bring the situation under control and prevent further unnecessary deaths from oral cancer conditions such as mouth and throat cancers.

Rising oral cancer levels in Yemen are being attributed to the local habit of chewing on the qat leaf for comfort and stimulation, it was reported this week.
As part of the local culture, qat chewing is a widely accepted practice indulged in by people from all walks of life as a way to relax at the end of the day or to combat tiredness.
The leaves of the qat plant are chewed raw releasing their juices into the mouth, which cause users to feel more alert and can give feelings of euphoria.
But Yemeni organisation the National Foundation to Support Cancer Patients has expressed concerns over the widespread practice, which they believe to be a key factor in the swiftly rising diagnosis rate for oral cancers including gum cancer and mouth cancer. Top local cancer doctor Nadeem Mohammed Saeed explained that around a third of the cancer cases treated at his clinic in the county’s capital were oral cancer conditions.
The qat leaf, which has effects similar to banned amphetamines when chewed, is highly addictive and estimates say that as many as seven out of ten households in the country have at least one qat user.
The crop has been grown in Yemen for five centuries and over half of the country’s fertile land is dedicated to the growing of the plant, which has already been banned by some neighboring states.
But now experts are expressing concern over the use of chemicals to prevent insect infestation of the crops, claiming that it is this that has precipitated the steep rise in oral cancer rates in recent years.
The additional oral cancer cases are threatening to overwhelm the country’s one specialized oncology centre – which has only 56 beds and funding for only half of the patients presenting at its doors each month. Dr Saeed said the figures were “frightening”

UK residents are being advised to be on the lookout for symptoms of oral cancer conditions.
The British Dental Health Foundation has launched a campaign urging all patients to stay alert to the signs of possible oral cancer conditions such as cancer of the mouth, cancer of the tongue, cancer of the throat and cancer of the gums.
The organisation has taken action to highlight the risks from oral cancers after concerns were raised that oral cancer conditions do not received the same amount of publicity as other types of cancer despite high diagnosis rates and many people indulging in habits that can increase the risks such as smoking and drinking.
In a statement to the press the British Dental Health Foundation advised that catching oral cancer conditions early was key to successful treatment, and added that currently most patients do not received a diagnosis until they are in the later stages of the disease, a situation that impacts on the likelihood of survival.
The news comes as veteran Hollywood Actor Michael Douglas revealed he is suffering from a stage four throat cancer and receiving radiation and chemotherapy treatments.
Advice from the British Dental Health Foundation is that all patients should see their dental surgeon regularly, which not only helps keep a good level of oral health, but also allows for checks for any oral cancer symptoms to be carried out.
Patients were also warned to be on the lookout for changes such as patches of red or white on the tissues in the mouth, persistent ulcers or any unusual swelling of the face, and neck.
Anyone who discovers any suspicious changes is urged to see their dentist as a priority so that possible oral cancer such as mouth cancer, gum cancer, tongue cancer or throat cancer can be ruled out as soon as possible.

Oral cancer is not directly hereditary. Although, having a genetic predisposition to cancer itself may make your body more sensitive to cell mutation developed from exposure to things like tobacco, later, a possible result in Oral Cancer.

So, if you have a family history of cancer, you are best to avoid something that has proven to cause cancer in folks who don’t even have a family history of it. This means chewing tobacco.

Oral cancer is treated like any cancer, however it is probably most upsetting when it deals so much with a physical appearance and general operation of your daily life. Your jaw and teeth are your tools. When you are facing an inability to use them, you may find yourself losing your patience and become disheartened. Before it reaches this point, be aware of how important your mouth is. Instead, they will choose to chew tobacco because of the idea that it is less harmful than smoking or even snorting a nicotine product. Nothing could be further from the truth. When you are in the mindset that chewing tobacco is less harmful, you need to sit down and learn the facts.

The reality is that tobacco chewing can cause the same internal damage as smoking. The only difference is that in addition the to harm it causes your lungs and anything else, it causes quick physical damage to your oral health.

Nicotine is addictive. There is no use in arguing that. However, the teeth are victims of the immediate nature of this drug. Chewing tobacco has ingredients like chemicals, gravel, and even sand. Just think about it. Chewing on gravel and sand cannot be good for your teeth. Now add a destructive chemical to it. All these elements combined will ruin your smile quickly. Your teeth will lose their enamel and you will see he final result is tooth loss.

In addition to the tooth harm you will cause yourself with chewing tobacco, you will see that you get more sore throat and sensitive lips or gums. Eventually this can spread to your tongue. The feeling of sensitivity may move on towards rashes, immobility of jaw or numbness in lips. This can also mean a burning sensation.

Eventually, chewing tobacco will lead to oral cancer. Having your jaw erode and the cancer spread is the final casualty in chewing tobacco. While some say that it isn’t harmful, you will find many others who beg to differ. It is a habit of rubbing poison along your gums for extended periods of time. This is never a harmless act.

It is addictive and it is harmful. Before you choose to move from one danger to another, consider the idea of moving on to chewing on twigs or chewing gum. Easier said than done, but owning the truth about chewing tobacco is your first step in recovering your oral health.

A diagnosis of cancer is never good news. Yet much of the prognosis depends on the type and degree of the disease. Is it stage one, stage two? Is it treatable? Do you have a chance? Is it beatable? What’s realistic? What are your options? Can you fight it? All these questions quickly swirl around the patients’ mind in the first shocking moments after diagnosis.

Yes, cancer is beatable—but you must know your enemy in order to beat it. In the case of oral cancer, early detection is critical to the chances of recovery for the patient.

Oral cancer is a disease of the mouth, tongue, cheeks, sinuses, and pharynx. The rate of survival for those diagnosed with oral cancer is not high. Roughly half of those diagnosed with the disease in the U.S. each year (36,000) survive more than five years. The high mortality rate associated with this disease (higher than that of cervical cancer or skin cancer) is closely linked to the progression of the cancer at the time of its detection. Sadly, diagnosis of the oral cancer often doesn’t occur until the disease has spread to other parts of the body — usually the lymph nodes located in the neck. In its early stages, oral cancer often has few detectable symptoms, and may not noticed until it has spread, producing tumors in other areas of the body

There is a definitive link between the use of tobacco and the risk of oral cancer. While cigarette smoking increases the possibility of developing this type of cancer, smokeless tobacco products, like chewing tobacco, can also greatly increase a patient’s vulnerability to the disease. Anyone who uses tobacco regularly should be aware of the risks involved.

Oral cancer is treatable with a combination of therapies, including radiation, surgery and chemotherapy, depending on the specifics of the patient’s situation. A lifestyle free of tobacco, however, is one of the best defenses a patient can have against oral cancer.
